Meter is the drumbeat that thrums under the skin of all poems, even the most experimental free verse. But for more than a century, free verse has occupied a dominant position in American poetry. Metrical poems have never entirely lost their appeal, however, an appeal rooted in the body, and evident to the ear.
In this four-module workshop, you'll explore the most popular meters in English: dactyls, trochees, anapests, and iambs. You’ll write one poem in each of these meters, leaning on contemporary and classic examples as you leap from rhythm to rhythm, reclaiming that beat and harnessing its power.
