Poets in the World: A Field Guide

Zoomed out? Grab your favorite journal and get out into the world—of poetry. In this self-paced workshop you’ll become a poetic field-agent, immersing yourself in the physical world in whatever way you can.

You’ll read poets who draw their inspiration from a deep sense of place (and the people they meet there) including Mark Strand, Ada Limón, Ocean Vuong, Faylita Hicks, and James Baker Hall. Next, you’ll explore their use of craft elements, such as imagery and diction, and then, you’ll write in response to the places you visit during your “fieldwork,” whether that’s the Brooklyn Bridge, a beach at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, or walking down your street to 7-11. 

Each module includes a craft lesson, a suggestion for “field work,” sample poems, and both generative and revision based writing prompts.

Kim Noriega

Kim Noriega is the author of the poetry collection, Name Me published by Fortunate Daughter Press. Her poems have appeared in textbooks, journals, and anthologies including: American Life in Poetry, Paris-Atlantic, Split Lip, and The Tishman Review. She was the winner of the San Miguel Literary Sala’s Flash Nonfiction Prize and a finalist for the Edna St. Vincent Millay Poetry Prize, the Joy Harjo Prize in Poetry, and the James Baker-Hall Memorial Poetry Prize. Kim was selected as one of thirty international poets to participate in the 2018 Visible Poetry Project. She won the Urban Library Council’s Innovator Prize and was one of eight finalists for the Toyota National Family Teacher of the Year Award. She is recently retired from heading the San Diego Public Library’s award winning family literacy program.
