"Last Saturdays at the Barn" Events
From May to October, on the last Saturday of each month, the Poetry Barn offers on-site events from 12-5 PM. Each event takes on a unique theme, often intersecting with our location, history, and landscape. Each event begins with a two-hour close reading on the event's theme, followed-up by a one-hour power writing break with refreshments, ending with two-hour workshopping and reading of poems generated.
Four-Week Online Workshops
Four-week online workshops are entirely correspondence-based, taking place in a state-of-the-art online platform. You will have 24-7 access to your virtual classroom from anywhere there’s an internet connection and a device to receive it.
Each Monday at 12 PM EST, a new lesson on the workshop's theme—along with recommended readings, discussion questions, and a writing assignment—is posted. When you're ready—ideally, within the week—you will post one work (poem, essay, etc.) in response to the assignment, and provide feedback for three of your peers.
Time is fluid in an online workshop; Some weeks, you may be inspired to write and post immediately. Other weeks, you may not be able to post until a bit later on. Because of this, our workshops are accessible for a full month after the workshop ends to give you plenty of time to take full advantage of the readings, assignments, and peer-critiques.
Our teaching artists offer timely, detailed critiques on each of your poems, and offer suggestions, when a poem is ready, for potential publication venues.
Part of our mission is to provide local residents and area visitors of all ages, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and education levels with a free and accessible resource for discovering and reading poetry. To that end, we offer a comprehensive independent poetry collection available to the public to read on-site. We specialize in contemporary American poetry, as well as classics from all countries and eras. We also offer a dedicated section for swapping (take/leave a book). The library is currently available by appointment only or during our "Last Saturdays at the Barn" events.
Poetry Barn events are currently limited to parking space for eight cars. Carpooling is encouraged.
If you need to cancel a registration, we will gladly provide a full refund up to one month prior to the workshop's starting date, and a 50% refund up to two weeks prior. If you cancel less than two weeks prior to the start of your workshop, we will try our best to accommodate you by exploring options for either a refund or applying the fee to another event of your choice.
