One legitimate complaint levied against metrical poetry in the twenty-first century concerns a lack of diversity. Despite the wealth of meters ripe for revisitation, iambic meter remains the most common rhythm in English and, in the minds of many, represents all metrical poetry.
In this four-week workshop, we will begin with a brisk review of the four basic meters (trochees, dactyls, anapests, and iambs) then strike out for less-travelled territory. We will write fourteeners, sapphics, amphibrachs, and hendecasyllabics. As we immerse ourselves in these neglected patterns, we will attune our ears to strangeness and to wonder in order to compose the wildest poems we can.
